The classic girlhood fantasy of marrying a handsome prince is given a surprisingly realistic and subtle treatment in The Prince and Me. A pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin named Paige (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mona Lisa Smile) collides with a lazy, presumptuous exchange student named Eddie (Luke Mably, 28 Days Later) and, after a prickly beginning, falls in love with him--only to discover that Eddie is Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark. The scenario is pure wish-fulfillment, but director Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose) not only takes a closer look at what royal life is really like, she also takes the time to turn these fantasy roles into characters that have more than two dimensions. It's still a romantic comedy aimed at teenagers, but within the genre's parameters, the movie has a strong visual style and what might be called depth. --Bret Fetzer
I must admit that I am generally not one to indulge in the more "girly" romantic comedy genre. However, I am a fan of Julia Stiles as well as the occasional insouciant debauchery, and therefore thought I'd give this movie a try.
The Prince and Me is your classic Cinderella-type tale. Julia Stiles stars as Paige Morgan, a quaint farm girl on a mission. Paige aspires to finish up her pre-medical studies at the University of Wisconsin, go on to medical school at Johns Hopkins, and then use her knowledge to help those in need across the globe. However, when the handsome, though irresponsible, Prince Edvard (Luke Mably) decides to seek solstice at UW for a brief holiday excursion from his high-profile life, a kink is thrown into Paige's plans. Before she knows it, Paige is living the life of a princess within a Denmark palace, attending balls and being waited on hand and foot. But is living a life of royalty worth giving up her personal hopes and dreams? Or will true love conquer all?
Though many of the elements presented herein are quite cliché, I still found the story to be rather enthralling in an adorably cute, completely unrealistic kind of way. The Prince & Me is a light-hearted romp through every young girl's fantasy, but it also carries with it an enchanting moral. Furthermore, it seems as though the generally generic Cinderella-esque plot has been tweaked in such a way as to keep the tale entertaining. Buried amidst some of the hackneyed tripe is a genuinely noteworthy and heartwarming tale of love, perseverance, and exquisite imagination.
Both Julia Stiles and Luke Mably pulled off their roles quite nicely, and seem to work rather well together. With Ben Miller rounding out the cast as Prince Eddie's personal attendant, and adding the occasional comic relief, the plot and script tend to veer away from the overly-sappy. The DVD extras include a few deleted scenes, a gag re...
